2024 CSA Member Information

Hello Wild Child Farm Family!

We are so excited to be just 3 weeks away from our official season launch! Thank you for being a Wild Child Customer and for supporting local, regenerative produce. We love what we do, and we think it shows up in the quality of our food.

The following email contains a lot of information about our CSA this year. If you have questions, concerns or comments, don’t hesitate to reach out directly to me, Miles, at miles@wildchildfarm.love.

Membership Agreements:

As many of you know, CSA shares come with written agreements. As a member, you own your portion of produce from the time it is a seed until the time it is on your fork. For many years, this model has helped farmers to mitigate the many risks and pitfalls of farming. For example, if a giant hail storm devastates our crop, the farm, our customers and all involved parties share the loss. Your support as a member makes it possible for us to have a very wide variety of offerings, and allows us to take care of our soils, our animals and our people without constantly fearing total disaster!

While this agreement is formed to protect the farm, you can rest assured that we will do everything in our power to mitigate all of the risks inherent to farming, from hail, to flooding,  pestilence and more! We are in the business of making our customers happy and producing the most nutritious and delicious food in the county.
Please look for an email later this week that will contain your membership agreement. You can sign digitally, or print and return to us directly.

Membership Payment:

Customers who paid for their share in full, please skip ahead to the next section! For those who paid a deposit, please expect a phone call from me or another one of our amazing farmers! Eatfromfarms dot com, the website of our membership, does NOT have a feature for recurring payments and thus we must set it up through Stripe. This means we will call to obtain credit card information. We have several different payment options from weekly to monthly and more.

Pickup Locations:

BOULDER:

We have been patiently awaiting news from Shining Mountain Waldorf School about continuing our pickup there. As many of you know, SMWS built a new highschool and have been trying to dial in the logistics of allowing our pick up. With only a bit more than 3 weeks to go, we have decided to begin pickup at the farm for at least the first two weeks.

*Boulder Customers will pick up their shares on Thursday May 16th and Thursday May 23rd! Pickup time will be from 2 pm to 5:30 PM.

4795 Jay Road

Boulder, CO 80301

Enter the East side gate as shown in the map below. Please do not attempt to enter the residence entrance with the black gate.

LYONS:

We are very excited to have share pickups at MOXIE in downtown Lyons. We are also excited to be the sole provider of produce for the first ever Friday Farmers Market in the parking lot there. Every other Friday, we will be accompanied by other vendors, local music artists, coffee roasters and more. More details about this will follow! Lyons Customers will pick up their shares at Moxie Bread anytime between 2pm and 5pm!

Our first Meat Share pickup will be June 14th! Subsequent dates are as follows:

July 12th

August 16th

September 13th

October 18th

November 15th

A word on the Newsletter:

Each week we will send out a newsletter with the projected list of items in your share, recipe ideas, cute animal pictures and any updates or announcements we may have. It will come by way of mailchimp and the email address “wildchildfarmlove@gmail.com.” Please make sure to add the email address so our newsletters make it to your inbox and not your spam folder!

Too-Cute Corner

Buckle up and get ready for this week’s cuteness around the farm. This week we have our baby goat “Orejas” nuzzling up her mama “Juno!” Follow @wildchildfarmco on Instagram for more!

Thank you again for your support. We look forward to a fantastic season!

Welcome!

Woo! Y’all feel that? It’s getting pretty chilly. This week, we have some fall favorites lined up for you, and even more to come in the week ahead. We harvested our winter squash this week, which is always a beautiful event. After sitting, growing, and getting sweeter all season, they are picked just as they are ready to burst with all of their stored sugar. Many farmers love winter squash because it doesn’t demand a lot of us, but it rewards our patience with sweet abundance that can last all winter. We are eager to see y’all again this Friday, October 6th at CSA pickup. In the meantime, we humbly ask that you please fill out THIS SURVEY, to let us know how we can improve your experience next season!

This week we are keeping it simple with Roasted Beets and Radishes with Goat Cheese by A Pleasant Little Kitchen. This makes a great side dish or a lovely topping for toast. As a first year farm, we are always learning and growing. In your mailbox, you will find an end-of-season survey! Check out this yummy Summer Squash Soup by Erin Alderson! While our winter squash is slowly ripening, our zucchini and summer squash are starting to fade as the seasons change. We have certainly been loving our soups here at the farm as of recently, and this one is a great way to savor some of the last zucchinis! You can certainly adapt this recipe to use those shallots and celery, and maybe even garnish it with a jalapeno if you’re looking for a little kick. Much like our tomatoes, the eggplants were off to a slow start this due to a cooler early season. Now, they are really popping off! So many fun ways to get creative with eggplants. Greetings!

While it may not feel like it with these 98 degree days, we are one week closer to Fall! We see our chickens going in a little earlier at night, grasses getting drier in the hot sun, and an abundance of sunflowers on the farm. We know that the yellows of sunflowers will soon be replaced by the equally beautiful colors of autumn leaves. For now, though, we are thriving in this final stretch of summer and working to make sure you continue receiving abundant harvests. We love this work, and love getting to share its fruits with you all. Thank you in supporting us to nourish the land, ourselves, and this community.

Wow! We have been so inspired by our veggies lately, and we hope you are too. It’s hard to choose just one recipe to share with y’all this week! Today we want to highlight Farmer Shelby’s recommendation — this stunning and delicious Simple Spicy Coconut Chicken Curry by Tieghan Gerard at Half Baked Harvest. In this recipe, you will find a way to use your zucchini/summer squash, bell peppers, Thai basil, onions, and perhaps even a cheeky tomato. As always we’d love for you to share what you are cooking up with us on Instagram!

PS: Its (still) pickle season! If you find pickling cucumbers in your share this week, we invite you to quick pickle them. Maybe you have a lot of pickles by now, and you’re comfortable with that process. Either it’s time to start gifting pickles to friends, or perhaps try canning them for longer storage instead.

Howdy!

August has been an absolute blast. It’s hard to believe we’re halfway to September. While we are still in the summer swing at the farm, we have begun our fall planting, and even some experimental winter root crops!

A month ago, our team harvested garlic which has been drying and curing ever since. Garlic is an anomaly in annual crops. Planted early-to-mid October and left to overwinter, and producing yummy garlic scapes in late spring; it’s not until midsummer that the bulbs are harvested. The earth holds and nurtures this wonderful, medicinal, most delicious plant for such a longtime.

We are so happy to be bringing the joy that is garlic to your plates! Thank you in supporting us to nourish the land, ourselves, and this community.

Check out these stunning Mini Tomato & Feta Tarts by Justine’s Snacks! This is a great time to show love to those juicy summer tomatoes, and to use some of the basil you may still have from last week or that you’ve saved from prior weeks. We think adding garlic to the basil oil that this recipe calls for would be divine. These little morsels would look great on a plate with a salad using our greens, cukes, and maybe our carrots if you manage to not eat them all as a crunchy sweet snack (like we did). Thank you all so much for your involvement in our farm and supporting us as we regenerate the land. We hope you enjoyed this newsletter and what’s in your bag this week. We look forward to sharing more abundance as the season progresses. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any thoughts, questions, or feedback. We’re eager to connect!

Growing with care,

The Wild Child Farm Team

Farm Updates 5/3/23

Hello Boulder!

Life is teeming at the farm. Lots of plants are growing and the spring rains have made our pasture fit for the luckiest of animals! Here are some updates the farm has seen since our last email:

  • We have harvested kale, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, and basil.

  • We have been doing practice runs to make sure our harvesting, washing, and packing procedures are dialed in so that we can best serve you!

  • We finished our mobile, refrigerated trailer that will allow us to send you your food as cold and fresh as possible

  • We have discovered compostable “biobags” do not keep our produce as fresh as long as we had hoped and are searching for other sustainable alternatives

  • We had our first, on-farm blessing and processing of pigs. This day carried weight, but it opened our eyes to how to ethically raise meat and do things with  utmost integrity.

  • We forged new partnerships which will allow us to bring you a wider array of products to the CSA pickup table

  • We set up, and then re-set up our CSA payment plan (sorry for those who had to do it twice)

  • We added our apparel to the website (hats, beanies, hoodies)

We are very excited to announce that some of our add-on products are available on our website. You will see mushrooms, coffee, honey and more to come! These products can be purchased any time before WEDNESDAY on the week of pickup at 11:59pm and they will be added directly to your share. Don’t fret if you forget though, we will also have these products available for purchase at pickup. Give our “add on” shop a visit here.

Start-up farming is a difficult endeavor. It is a complicated system and it can be challenging to make sure everything is ready at the exact time. To best serve you, there may be times where we reach out to peer farms to fill any gaps in your produce share. More on this will come, if it becomes necessary.

Wild Child Farm Chicken is increasingly becoming a focus of the farm. A mentor of mine, Marcus McCauley, recently closed his operation and has made us one of very few (if any) regenerative meat chicken operations in the county. Due to popular demand, we are now offering our chicken outside of the meat CSA model as an add on for existing produce or egg share members.

For those who are interested in replacing the other proteins they purchase and consume with local, regenerative, humanely raised meat, we still have CSA meat shares available. Our pasture- raised pork is truly incredible, and helps us to take food waste out of the system by feeding it to our (extremely lucky) pigs. Our beef is coming from friend and rancher extraordinaire Andy Breiter and Grama Grass. We ask you to kindly refer anyone you know that might be interested. We are offering a $25 credit for each referral made by existing customers. If you refer someone, please email us to collect your reward!

Our model is one of education. We have swiftly onboarded 3 farm interns who live together in community. Our interns are currently studying permaculture design with the Boulder PDC. They are given the opportunity to self-guide their educational interests in regenerative ag, and each intern has leadership duties on the farm. What a cool way to connect people with the land and sow the seeds of young farmers in Colorado and beyond.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for June 3rd for a Farm tour and meet and greet. You can register here.

Wild Child Farm has an herbal medicine component in the works. For several years we have been cultivating medicinal plants and herbs for our personal use. This year, we will be launching several products made from herbs we grow here on the farm. Stay tuned to hear more!

Good Growing,

Farmer Miles
